Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) hanya diwariskan oleh IBU. Mitochondrial DNA ini mengkode gen-gen yang terkait dengan metabolisme di dalam sel. Sebagaimana kita ketahui, mitokondria berperan dalam oksidasi makanan, respirasi sel, dehidrogenasi, fosforilasi oksidatif, dan sistem transfer elektron.
